Mandolin Workshop

Sims Delaney-Pothoff and Don Stiernberg will conduct a mandolin workshop on the day of their concert. This two-hour session (1:30-3:30 p.m.) will be open to mandolinists of all levels of expertise and stylistic interest. The workshop will include discussion of chords and rhythm playing, and the creation of improvised solos, with some time allowed for fielding questions on all things mandolin. Students should bring their mandolin and pick. Portable recording devices for capturing hot licks, tunes, and ideas are welcome. Come pick with Sims and Don!

Mando Madness: Harmonious Wail & the Don Stiernberg Trio

The Gypsy swing group, Harmonious Wail, will join forces with the Don Stiernberg Trio in a concert at the historic Thrasher Opera House on Saturday, May 27 at 7:30 p.m. The groups, which both feature mandolin, will perform individually and then combine in a "Mando Madness” finale featuring classics such as the Allman Brothers’ "Jessica” and "Whipping Post.” Concert ticket enables free admission to special afternoon Mandolin Workshop.

The Empty Pockets

Their journey began with the late, great Buddy Holly. Childhood friends, Solomon (guitar) and Rosenthal (drums), started a band by joining forces with Bellon (bass). Soon after recording an original demo as "Josh & The Empty Pockets,” the new group was featured in a Chicago theatrical production of The Buddy Holly Story, performing as Buddy Holly & The Crickets six nights a week. There they met singer Brett (keys), who enlisted as the final band member. With more than one distinct vocalist now delighting their audiences, the band officially became, simply, "The Empty Pockets.”
